3D Cutting Head Mazak Type M5 & M10 Upper Section Assembly
Introduction
This blog follows the video above and describes the assembly of the upper section of the cutting heads used on Mazak 3D lasers such as the Space Gear, Fabri Gear, and U-44 models. Below you will find step-by-step instructions for assembly. Please note that all parts can be purchased on our website. In addition, we offer fully assembled units. We offer four assemblies of the upper section: the standard setup for the M5, the standard setup for the M10, and then an option for each with a deeper focal point.
Assembling the standard M5 setup
The “M5” is named as such because the nozzle thread is 5mm in diameter.
The following procedure is depicted in the video beginning at 0:17. This section describes the assembly process for the standard M5 setup. The fully assembled unit can also be found for purchase here.
- Take the housing top (M213S0) and insert the S-34 O-Ring (GVS034). You will need to push and tuck the O-Ring in to get a proper fit. Turn over the unit to add the small packing (M214G0) and push all the way down to get it flat against the housing top. Set aside.
- Place the retainer (M217S0) inside of the housing bottom (M215S0). Invert the unit and thread in the housing top that you just handled.
- Use a coupler spanner wrench (LT0011) to insert in one of the holes on the housing top (M213S0) to hold the unit steady. Then, invert the unit and use the spring retainer tool (LT0012) to gently twist and tighten the retainer (M217S0) until the connection is snug.
- Place the unit so that the retainer (M217S0) is facing up. Add the spring (M218S0) and then the large packing (M216G0) before topping it with the base top (M219S0). Gently flip the whole unit over.
- Use the bolts included with the base top (M219S0) and fasten to the unit through the housing bottom (M215S0). Tighten the bolts.
- Flip the unit over again. Add a S-42 O-Ring (GVS042) and press into the indentation on the base top (M219S0). This completes the assembly of the standard Mazak Type M5 setup.
Deeper Focal Point for M5
The following procedure is depicted in the video beginning at 3:14. This section describes the assembly process for a deeper focal point on the standard M5 setup. The fully assembled unit can also be found for purchase here.
- Take the housing top (M213S0) and insert the S-34 O-Ring (GVS034) into the wider end of the housing top. You will need to push and tuck the O-Ring in to get a proper fit. Turn over the unit to add the small packing (M214G0) and push all the way down to get it flat against the housing top. Set aside.
- Place the retainer (M217S1) inside of the housing bottom (M215S0). Invert the unit and thread in the housing top that you just handled.
- Use a coupler spanner wrench (LT0011) to insert in one of the holes on the housing top (M213S0) to hold the unit steady. Then, invert the unit and use the spring retainer tool (LT0012) to gently twist and tighten the retainer (M217S1) until the connection is snug.
- Place the unit so that the retainer (M217S1) is facing up.
This completes the assembly of the deeper focal point option for the standard Mazak Type M5 setup.
Assembling the standard M10 setup
The “M10” is named as such because the nozzle thread is 10mm in diameter.
The following procedure is depicted in the video beginning at 5:49. This section describes the assembly process for the standard M10 setup.
Set aside.
- Place the retainer (M217S0) inside of the housing bottom (M215S1).
Add the spring (M218S0) and then the large packing (M216G1) before topping it with the base top (M219S1). Gently flip the whole unit over.
- Use the bolts included with the base top (M219S1) and fasten to the unit through the housing bottom (M215S1). Tighten the bolts.
- Flip the unit over again. Add a S-42 O-Ring (GVS042) and press into the indentation on the base top (M219S1). This completes the assembly of the standard Mazak Type M10 setup.
Deeper Focal Point for M10
The following procedure is depicted in the video beginning at 8:47. This section describes the assembly process for a deeper focal point on the standard M10 setup. The fully assembled unit can also be found for purchase here.
- Take the housing top (M213S0) and insert the S-34 O-Ring (GVS034) into the wider opening of the housing top. You will need to push and tuck the O-Ring in to get a proper fit. Turn over the unit to add the small packing (M214G0) and push all the way down to get it flat against the housing top. Set aside.
- Place the retainer (M217S1) inside of the housing bottom (M215S1).

- Flip the unit over again. Add a S-42 O-Ring (GVS042) and press into the indentation on the base top (M219S1). This completes the assembly of the deeper focal point option for the Mazak Type M10 setup.
Converting Mazak Type M5, M10, and Precitec Type Cutting Heads
If your laser is currently equipped with the Mazak Type M5 cutting head and you want to switch to the M10, it's a simple task. The only parts that are different are the inner and outer cones and the Vespel nut on the lower section. All the other parts in the cutting head are the same. If you have extra parts on hand to rebuild the cutting head, they will all be usable except for the cones.
If your laser is currently equipped with the Precitec Type cutting head, it is possible to retrofit the Mazak Type M5 or M10 parts using a new design made by MG Laser. This will include a simple calibration that needs to be done to the Precitec amplifier. Please inquire by phone or email for more information at 619-694-9826 or parts@mglaser.com.
